The Primary Sources of Container Data: Who’s Tracking What?
About This Video
Ever wondered about the sources of container tracking data? Matt Turner, Head of Data at Terminal49, breaks it down:
"The primary source is the shipping lines—they’re coordinating the movements. But the data they provide often comes from others. Terminals, for instance, inform carriers when containers are discharged or moved to rail. Once outgated, truckers and rail carriers take over."
And what about vessels? "There’s no central source for vessel locations," Turner says, "but we use the global AIS system to track positions in near real-time."
At Terminal49, we bring all these sources together for complete, accurate tracking. Watch the full video to learn more!
