New Detention and Demurrage Laws
We guide you through key aspects of the new regulations to help your organization prepare effectively and eliminate risks associated with compliance.
Stay compliant and minimize demurrage fees with our automated container tracking and risk management solutions.
Detention and demurrage charges occur when transportation equipment, such as shipping containers, exceed their allotted free storage (a.k.a. “free time”) inside or outside the port. Demurrage is incurred when containers remain in the port or terminal. Detention applies when containers are in other locations, such as a warehouse.
Most shipping lines offer a free period for storage of containers, but charges after the Last Free Day (LFD) can add up quickly. The average cost for each day (per diem fee) is around $75 to $300 per container in demurrage or detention, but fees can exceed $500 per diem in many cases. Since it’s not uncommon for many businesses to ship thousands of containers each year, the totals for these fees can easily add up to millions of dollars annually!
It can take a lot of resources to avoid these charges by tracking where containers are located and planning their pickup ahead of time, knowing how long containers have been in storage and how to get them back in motion. That’s why using a centralized platform with full visibility into a container’s journey is a great way to save money and improve operational efficiency in logistics management.
Real-time tracking and alerts give you immediate visibility into your containers, surfacing potential detention and demurrage charges before they accumulate. This proactive approach helps you take action early, saving time and money.
Helps you comply with the latest OSRA regulations, ensuring you have all the necessary documentation at your fingertips. This makes audits and disputes easier to handle.
“Terminal49’s API gives us the visibility data we need in a modern, developer-friendly package. There are other APIs out there, but they often lack timely and accurate data and don’t clean or normalize anything, which makes the results hard to work with.”

“Experienced developers can build a complete container tracking app with only a few hours of coding... and with Chain.io and Terminal49, companies without coding resources can feed updates into their TMS without any code at all.”

“We love the simplicity. Terminal49 has a lot of data but it's easily digestible. I can navigate to what I need to see right away.”
